Layered lighting is a crucial element in interior design, transforming a space from flat and lifeless to dynamic and inviting. It goes beyond simply adding light -it’s about creating balance, enhancing functionality, and adding depth. By combining different types of lighting, you can shape the mood of a room and highlight its best features.

Ambient lighting provides the room’s overall illumination, setting the tone and ensuring the space feels comfortable and evenly lit. It’s the base layer, often coming from ceiling lights, chandeliers, or wall sconces.

Task lighting focuses on specific areas where activities like reading, cooking, or working take place. It adds precision and brightness exactly where needed, using desk lamps, under-cabinet lights, or pendant fixtures.

Accent lighting adds drama and interest by highlighting focal points such as artwork, architectural details, or decorative pieces. Spotlights, track lights, or LED strips create contrast and visual intrigue.

The best rooms have them all!

Blending these layers thoughtfully results in a well-balanced, functional, and visually captivating space. This doesn’t mean every light needs to be on at once, but having the flexibility to adjust and layer them as needed give you control over the mood and functionality of that room.

How to layer lighting in your home

Layering lighting effectively varies from room to room, depending on function and ambiance. In the living room, start with ambient lighting, such as a ceiling fixture or recessed lights (which my amazing photographer takes out of all my photos- haha!) , to provide overall illumination. Add task lighting with floor or table lamps for reading or working areas. Accent lighting, like wall sconces or LED strips, can highlight artwork, bookshelves, or architectural features, adding warmth and depth. Dimmers are a great addition to adjust the mood as needed. We put dimmers on almost everything!

In the kitchen, bright ambient lighting, such as recessed ceiling lights or a central pendant, ensures full visibility. Task lighting is essential under cabinets to illuminate countertops for meal prep. Accent lighting, like toe-kick LEDs or glass cabinet lights, enhances the design and provides a subtle glow. In the bedroom, ambient lighting from a ceiling fixture sets the tone, while bedside lamps or wall-mounted reading lights serve as task lighting. Soft accent lighting, such as cove lighting or sconces, adds a cozy, relaxing atmosphere.

In the bathroom, layered lighting ensures both function and comfort. Overhead ambient lighting, such as a flush-mount fixture, should be paired with task lighting around mirrors for grooming tasks. Accent lighting, like backlit mirrors or wall sconces, can enhance the spa-like feel. Finally, in the dining room, a statement chandelier provides ambient lighting, while wall sconces or buffet lamps add accent lighting. Consider dimmable options to create the perfect mood for different occasions. By thoughtfully layering lighting in each room, you can enhance both functionality and style throughout the home.
