Designing a custom home is often imagined as a series of exciting selections—finishes, fixtures, and final details.
And yes, those moments are fun. But in reality, a custom home takes a lot of work. I often joke that our profession is the most unglamorous–glamorous job—equal parts creativity and constant problem-solving.
Behind every beautiful space is a thousand decisions, adjustments, and details being worked through long before anything is ever installed. The most successful homes are shaped through thoughtful planning, coordinated decisions, and a clear design direction well before construction even begins.
It Begins Before Construction Ever Starts

When interior design is introduced during the architectural planning phase, it begins to inform the very foundation of the home—guiding the layout, influencing window placement, and shaping how natural light moves throughout each space. It also impacts the home’s structural flow, from how rooms connect to how ceiling heights and sightlines are experienced. These early decisions set the tone for everything that follows. When design is considered from the beginning, the result is a home that feels intentional, cohesive, and effortlessly livable.
Concept Development: Defining How the Home Will Live

Concept Development is where the home begins to take shape—not just in form, but in how it will truly live. This phase is centered around understanding your lifestyle, from daily routines to how you entertain and gather as a family. It’s where we establish the overall layout direction and define the spatial relationships between rooms, thinking beyond individual spaces to how the home flows as a whole.
Every decision is made with intention, considering how each area connects and supports the way the client wants to live. This is where the foundation of the entire home is set, ensuring that everything that follows is not only beautiful, but deeply functional and aligned with real life.
Design Development: Aligning Vision, Budget, and Selections

Design Development is where vision, budget, and selections come into alignment. This phase goes far beyond simply choosing items—it’s about refining the overall material direction and ensuring every element works together cohesively. Cabinetry, plumbing, lighting, and finishes are all thoughtfully coordinated, with each decision made in relation to the next. At the same time, we balance investment with priorities, helping clients allocate where it matters most. Every selection impacts another—nothing happens in isolation—and this is where the design becomes both intentional and fully connected.
Technical Detailing: Where Design Becomes Buildable

Technical Detailing is where design becomes buildable. This phase is all about wrapping the details—developing precise drawings, detailed specifications, and coordinating closely with the builder to ensure everything is executed correctly. Every layer is carefully thought through so the design can be built exactly as intended. In our process, we refer to this as the cocoon phase—where much of the work happens behind the scenes, and clients don’t always see the level of coordination and problem-solving taking place. It’s a quieter stage, but a critical one, where we help guide you through the waiting—even when it may seem like nothing is happening—so that everything comes together seamlessly in the end.
The Volume of Decisions (and Why Guidance Matters)

Designing a custom home comes with a surprising volume of decisions—each one layered with timing, dependencies, and impact on the next. From materials and finishes to layouts and lighting, the sheer number of choices can quickly feel overwhelming, especially when decisions need to be made in a specific sequence to keep the project moving forward. This is where a structured process makes all the difference. Rather than navigating it alone, we bring clarity and direction to each step, helping you move through decisions with confidence and ease. Our role is to simplify the complexity—so instead of feeling overwhelmed, you feel supported, informed, and fully aligned every step of the way.
Collaboration with the Builder
Collaboration with the builder is essential to bringing a custom home together seamlessly.
When the designer and builder work in partnership, decisions are communicated clearly and executed with precision, helping to prevent delays and costly mistakes. It’s a relationship built on mutual respect—each role bringing its own expertise—while staying aligned toward one shared vision for the home.
When this collaboration is strong, the entire process feels more cohesive, efficient, and ultimately more successful.
A custom home is not defined by individual selections.
It is defined by how those decisions are made, how they work together, and how the home ultimately supports the people living in it.
Designing a home at this level requires intention, coordination, and a clear process from the very beginning.
We work with clients who value a comprehensive, detail-driven approach to designing their home.
If you’re planning a custom build or renovation and want every element considered from the start, we invite you to schedule a discovery call.
