Entry Way -Where there is NO way

to the trade

For as long as I can remember I have always had a love/hate relationship with HGTV. While I agree there are some fun shows, dramatic reveals, and even great ideas- one thing remains certain, It has created unrealistic expectations.

“I just don’t know why this is taking so long? They can do a room on HGTV in a weekend! What is wrong with me?”  – Distressed client

I want to help you understand that you are not alone. Here are the things to know about TV Design shows.

1. TV Design Process is not clear

Television will always show highlights and specialize in the drama (the good and bad). The time frame of each design stage is not spelled out as clearly on Tv Design shows. When some projects look like they did it over a weekend, the reality is they probably met months before, took measurements,  went through styles, went back to their offices to draw, shop, plan, source, and pull together a design, then present to the client. Now, even if they did present to the client on camera and the client loves everything, they still have to order it all. Most custom furniture, upholstery, cabinets, etc.  take 6-8 weeks to arrive once ordered.

** A typical Kitchen takes 3-5 weeks of planning, shopping, drawing out, estimating costs. Then 6-8 weeks to order materials, and finally about 6 weeks to demo and rebuild the room.

2.TV Design shows are a production

These shows are there to entertain above all. In fact there are several shows on HGTV that I can binge watch. But, they don’t always show you what the client budget and payout was related to the donated labor and Designer fees. A benefit to having a TV show do your room is they pay for some or all of the labor (A HUGE bonus!) Those services are very valuable. So, if your NOT on TV – you will pay for these professionals. And you get what you pay for.

**PSSST! I was once hired to design a space for someone on House Hunters. They had to buy their new home before even applying to be on the show. SPOILER ALERT – There is no search for a home! Who even lives in those other houses?? They already bought the house!  But this show is there to entertain. And they do a good job of it.

3. TV Design shows use limited resources

While resources or materials ARE available to these designers, most TV shows will use companies that trade for marketing purposes. They aren’t all bad, but some of the products are of cheap quality or don’t suit the client’s needs or tastes. I have a friend that was on trading spaces. Do you remember that show? And Hildi was the Designer. She put feathers all over her walls. When the cameras went home, they spent many days trying to fix that design Faux pas!

Of course, not all Design shows are that drastic. But, it is just important to remember that Television is a production and enjoy it!

What do you get when you hire an interior designer??

Glad you asked!

You get someone who will listen to how you use your space. Find out what styles and colors you like. Someone who will walk you through the design process and make sure nothing is missed. A good designer that will guide you in your budget and selection process, help you save when you can and invest in the important stuff. Ultimately, you want someone who knows codes & requirements, who has studied (eh hem– Bachelors of Interior Design)  AND knows materials & construction,  how fabrics & finishes should perform. A designer who will do floor plans & renderings to help you see what the outcome will be and make sure you are excited with your new space!

WELL, I’m your girl, and I have the street cred to back it up!
